MAKING THE MISSING - AMY McARTIST

In “Making the Missing” Artist Amy McArtist invites observers into a Relational work and sensual experience of art -making. Through photos, educational materials, and a miniature sculpture making process, together artist and participant remount Chris Booth’s work -“Aramoana”-in its entirety.
Utilization of simple craft supplies facilitates a space for non-artist visitors to create a tangible interpretation of Oputae with focus on works of the Hotere Sculpture Garden. The bronze title plaques, which merely announce the works, afford insufficient provenance. McArtist’s exercise allows for a full discussion of the events leading to the sculptures permanent display.
Amongst other simple craft supplies, shells gathered from Aramoana elude to Booth’s original work and his use of natural elements. Acknowledgement of Karakia, performed when obtaining the shells further informs the demonstration, and assists in placing the work amongst the landscape. Visitors will leave with an altered perception of this place Oputae.
